Pathfinder Introduction

Pathfinder for Career Exploration - A Prototype

The goal of building the Pathfinder prototype is to create a career and discovery tool built on a mobile platform that can be accessed on any mobile device or computer. Engaging students with technology and providing them 24/7 access to critical information will allow them to chart their future and the right path for that future. Florida has a critical need to increase particular career fields especially those that focus on STEM fields. The Pathfinder prototype has been created with this critical need in mind and with the following features:

  • Aptitude tools that link students to particular career fields based on their interests
  • Links students to career academies and academic opportunities within their communities
  • Provides examples of career fields through video and other online resources
  • Provides information on job availability, pay scale and career tracks
  • Tracks internships and volunteer hours and links that to career interests
  • Links students to professionals within career fields and opportunities for mentorship
  • Links to College and Career Readiness and Common Core standards

Background

In 2011, WFSU was awarded a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to participate in the American Graduate; Let’s make it happen project. This national initiative is designed to engage communities across the country on the importance of keeping kids in school and on the path to high school graduation. WFSU developed an on the ground project with a local high school that works with at risk youth. Finding a way to engage kids in their own educational path and linking them to jobs and careers became very apparent and gave way to the idea of creating a mobile website or mobile phone application that students could navigate. Reaching out to the Florida Center for Interactive Media (FCIM) at Florida State University, the Pathfinder project was launched. Through some initial funding from the Florida Legislature, FCIM developed a prototype of the Pathfinder with input from Tallahassee Community College, Leon County Schools and other educators in the community. Our goal is to seek funding to fully build the program and offer to students across the state.
